Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Humana Veterans Healthcare Services?
In response to this call for improved veteran access to private healthcare providers, Humana, Inc., a proven national healthcare leader with extensive network development experience, established Humana Veterans Healthcare Services (Humana Veterans).

What programs does Humana Veterans participate in with the VA?
Humana Veterans currently has two contracts with the Department of Veteran Affairs; Project HERO (Healthcare Effectiveness through Resource Optimization) and Project ARCH (Access Received Closer to Home).  They are both Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) programs to help veterans get the care they need when it’s not available at their local VA medical center.

How did Humana Veterans Healthcare Services become the VA's partner?
For Project HERO Humana responded to a 2006 Request for Proposal issued by the VA. In October 2007, Humana Veterans was selected by the VA as its partner based on capability, experience and value for the delivery of health services to veterans in four VA healthcare networks.  This was repeated in 2011 for Project ARCH.

What VA Facilities participate in Project HERO?
Currently Project HERO provides access to the Humana Veterans network of providers in:

VISN 8   - Most of Florida and Southern Georgia
VISN 16 - South Central States – including far west Florida. Panhandle counties
VISN 23 - Upper Midwest & Central States
VISN 20 - Pacific Northwest

What VA Facilities participate in Project ARCH?
Project ARCH is a unique program as it is located in only 1 county within a select VISN.  The participating VISN/Counties are:

VISN 6 – Farmville, VA
VISN 15 - Pratt, KS
VISN 18 – Flagstaff, AZ
VISN 19 – Billings, MO

Will either of these projects be expanded beyond their current areas?
Since the award of the original contract no expansion outside of the current areas have occurred, but Humana Veterans stands ready to assist the VA in meeting the healthcare needs of veterans wherever they may occur.

Are veterans required to pay for medical care provided through Project HERO or Project ARCH?
The Veterans Health Administration is responsible for paying all claims associated with authorized care.  Please notify Humana Veterans (866-458-6630) if you receive any request for payment as a result of services authorized through Humana Veterans.  Veterans may be responsible for inpatient, outpatient, and pharmacy co-payments to the VA if not otherwise exempt.  This bill will come from the VA medical center that referred you for this service and is consistent with co-payment made for services provided at your VA medical center.

Is the VA informed of the results of care provided?
Yes.  The records of treatment received by Humana Veterans providers are promptly delivered to the referring VA medical facility.

I am a healthcare provider.  How can I participate?
Humana Veterans is interested in discussion with all potential providers of healthcare services.
